Round 1 - Bayswater vs Elsternwick
All matches in Round 1 were postponed due to the unavailability of several grounds.
Round 2 - Bayswater vs Oakleigh1st XI The 1st XI has started the season on a fantastic note disposing of last year’s premiers Oakleigh in convincing fashion. Batting first after winning the toss, we got off to a good start before a middle-order collapse saw us lose 4 wickets without adding a run. We managed to rebuild to a respectable 8/124 off our 40 overs, courtesy of a 55 run 6th wicket partnership between Matt Jonson and Danny “Sprouter” Adams who scored 30 and 28 respectively. Dean Connell also pitched in with a valuable 26 early in the innings. From the outset it was clear that we would have to bowl well to restrict Oakleigh’s impressive batting line-up but when we had them 6/71 we were well and truly in control of the match. Thereafter, just like we had done, Oakleigh lost 4 wickets without a run being added, to give us our first victory of the season. Brendan “Skeeter” O’Riley dominated the batsmen taking 4/8 off 5 overs in a brilliant display of bowling, with Darryl Stranger and Matt Jonson picking up 2 wickets each. Great start to the year boys! Matt de Neef 2nd XI A promising start to the season for the boys as we took on last year’s premiers. Congratulations to Andrew Bartle and Jason Reynolds on their first games at the club. Good to see S. Loonstra back where he belongs and leading from the front with a solid 56 n.o. With our strong batting line up this year we saw a lot of starts from most batsmen and reached a very competitive total. We had a good day in the field with plenty of encouraging signs, Reynolds was fantastic with 3/13 off 8 and a great performance from P. Milne as well. Unfortunately a few dropped catches and five times as many wides as the opposition proved to be the difference in the end with the boys losing in the last over. As painful as the loss was, I know that we will build on it knowing that we can improve each week. Gavin Hives 3rd XI
The 3rd XI did not play due to inclement weather 4th XI Today we played Oakleigh. We lost the toss and had to field. Opening bowlers were Rod “Froggy” Smith and Michael Fahy with great figures of: Froggy 0/5 off 5 overs and Michael 2/13 off 7 overs. 1st change Matt Hawes and Mark Harrison had figures of 1/18 off 7 and 2/26 off 7 respectively. Matt Hayhurst took 2 good catches and Lachlan Tindal kept well. The younger players today showed us experience few that concentration and team spirit and ability can work wonders. Terrific effort to keep Oakleigh to 9/104 fellas. John Hayhurst
Round 3 - Bayswater vs Moorabbin1st XI The 1st XI was the only Bayswater side that completed their round 3 match against Moorabbin, and we came away with a good win. Winning the toss and batting, Mark Collins and Steve Loonstra had us off to a solid start before Collo fell when the score was 41. Several solid partnerships throughout the innings and great contributions from everyone helped get us to a very competitive 9/246 off our 80 overs. Skipper Matt Jonson top scored with a very well compiled 47 batting uncharacteristically low at #7, Matt Cunningham scored a solid 30, “Skeeter” O’Riley blazed away for a great 28-run cameo toward the end, and several others got good starts. With a very respectable total to defend, several early wickets helped to ensure a solid victory. Daryl Stranger took 2/19 off 12, Mark Collins 2/13 off 10 and John Salter Jnr on 1st XI debut took a respectable 3/32 off 10.1 overs. Ollie and Skeeter chipped in with one wicket apiece in a tight team bowling effort which saw Moorabbin dismissed for 103 in the 52nd over of the day.
Matt de Neef 3rd XI Park cricket at its best, no change rooms, no showers however we made the best of what we had. Winnng the toss, deciding to bat, Josh 26 and Gary 4 got us off to a decent start followed by Wocka with a good 47. Mitch at four was very solid and played some excellent drives for a well compiled 25, unfortunately in his return game Joel missed a straight one early, Darren Dewar also his first game this season batted with great precision for a fantastic 32. Michael and Ben finished off the overs for us to finish at 8/254 which we would like to think is defendable if we bowl and field to our usual standard. Overall, a very solid team effort.
(Please note: Captain Tony Sheehan wrote this report and in the interest of modesty and humility omitted the fact that he scored 84 batting at #6, proving he still hasn’t lost it. As Tony himself said, “They left the bell in the ball this week…” Also, the second week of this match was washed out.) Tony Sheehan 4th XI Yet again day two was cancelled. In both games so far our 4ths have performed well with the ball and high quality fielding performances. Harro is continuing to direct his bowling to middle-leg with good concentration, Shane is keeping a terrific line at off stump, and Froggy is working very hard with our young bowlers. The hard work by this group is already paying off with high concentration at the job at hand. In both games so far we believe we had the ascendancy. We are looking forward to the game next week against Box Hill where we will hopefully complete a game on the right side of the ledger.
John Hayhurst
Round 4 - Bayswater vs Box Hill1st XI Jonno won the toss and elected to bat on a flat Bayswater pitch and the visitors got away to a good start dismissing the skipper Matt Jonson and Steve Loonstra out early to have us 2-18. The Batting didn't improve much with all batsmen getting off to good starts but not being able to go on with it. Debutant Scott Huntley offered some resistance making a solid 31 batting at three. He looked un-troubled facing the new ball and some very good bowlers in Andrew Blake and Jonathon Finch. However Scotty had very little support, Ollie Wilhelm the only other batsman to impress with 29. Scott was stumped making the score 5-78 and wickets continued to fall regularly, (6-107, 7-120, 8-126, 9-132, 10-159). The following week we set out to defend 159 runs. Darryl Stranger bowled very well with the new ball and was extremely unlucky not to claim an early wicket or two. Ollie bowled quite well at the other end but was showed up when he was replaced by the skipper. Jonno bowled sensationally with figures of 5-42 off 19. The wickets were assisted with some very good fielding and three blinder catches from Matt Cunningham, Ollie Wilhelm and Danny "Sprouta" Adams, (just ask him how good it was). However some good bowling and very good fielding was not enough to defend the modest score of 159. A good effort in the field but the game was lost with a disappointing batting performance. John Salter Jnr 2nd XI After only coming out of last game with 3 points instead of a certain 6, the team had come out to play knowing that Box Hill was going to be a tough task. It was the best fielding performance in a long time with every player contributing saving certain runs on many occasions putting a lot of pressure on their batsmen. Leading by example was A. Milne who lived up to his name (China!) showing what commitment is all about in the field. This was backed up with some tight bowling from Baldwin returning from injury, picking up three wickets and Reynolds chipping in with two. We faced four overs on the first day losing Salts early and being 4/35 early on day 2. Our batting depth showed with a great effort from Clark (66) and de Neef (36) who put on 71 and steadied the ship and Reynolds having a great season with bat and ball also making 38. Well done boys, lets build on this and set ourselves up for a big season. Gavin Hives 3rd XI Winning the toss and batting was an easy decision on that pitch, Josh and Wok got us away to a good start with scores of 17 and 16. Grant Redwood continued with 35 and Dave Glover at 4 was very solid and looked completely at ease with a fine 39. Mitch continued his good form with a well compiled 32 followed by Darren Dewar who never looked like going out with 22*. The scene was set for Joel who punished their bowling quite severely for a rapid 55 which set us up for a good score of 7/239. Our bowling was exceptionally tight with great catching and fielding which applied too much pressure for Box Hill to handle, the simple task of bowling straight and to a plan allowed us to dismiss them for 119 Sean Callinan with 5/22 was ably supported by Liam 1/37 off 17, Darren Dewar tied them up with 2/16 off 10 and Wok who bowled 14 straight took 2/19, Ben Jackson bowled very well for no wickets but his efforts were also very important in that he kept the pressure on and didn't allow them any easy balls. All in all a very disciplined day in the field on what was an excellent batting wicket.
Tony Sheehan
Round 5 - Bayswater vs Brighton1st XI Brighton won the toss and elected to bat on a typical slow Brighton track. After a steady start by Brighton, Daryl Stranger broke through with the first wicket to have Brighton 1/16. Tight bowling and good fielding weere the order of the day and at tea Brighton where 6/68. Some good batting by Brighton's lower order, one partnership in particular that reaped 44 runs for the eighth wicket saw Brighton scramble to 151. Skeeta did the most damage with the ball taking a credible 3/18 from his 11 overs. At the close of play we where 1/7 in reply, losing the wicket of Dean Connell on the very last ball of the day. Still confident of victory we turned up the second week to a slower Brighton wicket and outfield due to the rain during the week. We started confidently Scott Huntley and Matt Cunningham both getting starts and at 3/71 some application should have got us home. This was not to be as losing the wickets of Jonson, ranger and Adams after tea and a back injury to Ollie had the rooms scrambling for treatment. Skeeta and Ol steadied the ship however, losing the last 3 wickets for 15 runs saw us fall 5 short, Ol top scored with 39. As mentioned during the week by Ingers sometimes we have to change the way we bat in order to help the team and I would suggest we could all have a look at how we got out and answer that question honestly. Having said that, Brighton where tremendous with their bowling in an already depleted attack and having bowlers that can open the bowling and bowl 26 and 30 overs each is a bonus. Brighton take the points in a game which we never took the initiative of while batting. Rob Baldwin
2nd XI Having lost outright in their previous match, Brighton were never going to be at the top of their game. The match began with Brighton winning the toss and sending us in on a dead, flat and lifeless pitch – an interesting, if not negative decision. Our innings started somewhat slowly reaching 4/48 in the 31st over before Brett Clark and John Salter (Snr) started to lift the tempo. We were eventually bowled out for 187 in the final over after a brief cameo from Andy Bartle(22*) The runs were spread quite evenly with the ever reliable Jason Reynolds scoring a solid 31, Brett Clark scoring 25 and John Salter Snr scoring 26. We were right on top this Saturday right from the start when Jason got his first wicket and Brighton were 3/14 off 15 overs. A few brief partnerships dragged the day on longer that it should have - Brighton all out for 141 in the 78th over. Adam Reeves was the star with the ball taking 5/36 off his 15 overs while Andy and Jason took 2 wickets each. A good win, and one that will help us build some momentum leading up to Christmas. Best wishes to Jason who leaves for the USA
Matt de Neef 3rd XI Overnight they were 2/23, we were obviously pleased when one of their not out batsmen didn't turn up the second week, after the rain overnight we wondered how the pitch may be but it was good enough to start at 2.00 pm and we finished at 3.20 after rolling BrightonI believe Brighton are struggling for numbers but credit must go to our bowlers who put it where it should go all the time, we then created growing pressure which was to our advantage and they collapsed in both innings. I hope our players realize this is a one off and next week will obviously be completely different, if we play to our best we can match it with anyone but if we become complacent we will pay the price with an embarrassing defeat. Tony Sheehan We played Brighton last weekend and overall we must be very disappointed with our effort. We dropped 5 catches on day one which let them off the hook. Our ground fielding and backup efforts were of a high standard. Our bowling was overall acceptable, Brighton were 2/110 at tea. We got the last 8 wickets for 80 runs (good come back)
Day two; Lachlan & Shane gave us a 20 run start Gary H with 42 Froggy with 22 JH with 17 * Out of 139 Three small double figures don't win matches. The rest of our batsman must understand that application and occupation at the crease must be in the front of their minds at every contest. Cavalier shots at ordinary bowling generally gets you out . We expect a much better performance this week. John Hayhurst
Round 6 - Bayswater vs Malvern1st XI
Jonno won the toss and elected to bat on a typical Bayswater wicket and we had a reasonable start of 3/62 and some solid batting from Mark Collins (26) and Mat Cunningham (24). Then Malvern brought on Monto Perera who changed the game more or less on his own capturing 6/26 to have us all out for 95 with some 15 over remaining in the day. At the close of play Malvern had rocketed to 0/48 with some aggressive batting.
Day 2 had seen heavy rain halt the start of play till 4:00pm and with only 35 overs remaining in the day, capturing 10 wickets became an unlikely task and as expected our percentage suffered more than we would have liked due to reduced time. Skeeta O'Riley was again the pick of our bowlers capturing 2/23 off his 11 overs. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI
Once again Keg won the toss and didn’t hesitate in electing to bat first. Alan Milne got us off to a great start with a fantastic hook shot for six into the pavilion before wickets began to fall around him. At 5/52 in the 21st over our prospects of posting a competitive score were not looking too great, but a handy 21 from Keg, and a very solid 63 from a “Squizzy” Taylor paved the way for a defendable score of 208. Ernie Disco (Liam) played a brilliant cameo at the end scoring a well compiled 40 runs. On the second day, Malvern reached 1/67 fairly comfortably before a flurry of wickets saw them lose 4/0 placing them on a precarious 5/67. Wickets continued to fall before Malvern’s final pair put on a very respectable 55 run partnership and placed the game in the balance. A late bowling change saw John Salter Snr take the final wicket, Malvern out all for 179 in the 75th over of the day. Liam Thomas was the pick of the bowlers (all-rounder!) taking a very tight 3/26 off 20 overs with 12 maidens. Darren Dewar in his 2nd XI debut took a handy 3/61 off 17 including a brilliant wrong-un to clean bowl one of the Malvern lower order batsmen. A great win against the top side, and one that will place us in great stead for the remainder of the season. Matt de Neef 3rd XI
Malvern won the toss and decided to bat on what was an excellent track, our initial aim was to bowl corridor and take some early wickets as we knew later on the pitch would only get better. Gareth Leese 2/39 off 17 in his first game with BCC and Daniel Bakker were both very good unfortunately we didn't get the early breaks. Our ability to close them down was a feature and this eventually led to wickets on our. Polly 2/18 off 12 and Daniel 1/48 off 23 once again tied the middle order up for an hour or so but we just couldn't string a couple of wickets together and Malvern finished at 7/210. Ryan Wilson also his first senior game chipped in with 1/32 and Wokka with 1/48 were instrumental in holding the scoring rate to what we believed a gettable target.Batting on day 2, we spoke about the need to bat 80 overs and if we could we thought we should win, Gaz with 28 (Retired Hurt ), Dave Glover 69 and Josh 31 were our major contributors but it was very much a "team effort" with contributions from just about everyone. It was good to see our less experienced players bring us home in the final few overs with some excellent stroke play and running between the wickets, full credit to them. Tony Sheehan 4th XI The day started out well at Malvern, all of our players ready keen to go until the opening bat for Malvern suggested otherwise with some very powerful strokes all over the park. The opening stand was approximately 40 runs in quick time while the next 7 wickets fell for 53 runs and we were on top until the tea break with Malvern 8/93. We proceeded to drop 3 important catches just after tea and they ended up with 185 Froggy Smith 4 / 52 off 22 overs Matt Hayhurst 2 / 55 off 20 overs Ben Jackson 4 / 36 off 16 overs
We failed to take to the field last Saturday but the general consensus was that we were capable of getting the 185 runs needed to win. The team spirit is very good in this side but the age balance is not. Frog & I total 94 years between us and the other 9 total 161 years. But you would not know it from the enjoyment we all get out of playing cricket together. John Hayhurst
Round 1 Make-up game - Bayswater vs Elsternwick1st XI
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl in very blustery conditions Elsternwick got off to a flyer and where travelling at around 4 an over until Skeeta (2 wickets) and Jonno (1 wicket) managed to get break throughs, Dazza then came on and further halted the onslaught 2/9 from his 8 overs. Elsternwick scrambled to 135 and we where happy with our efforts in the field, special mention to Scott Huntley for good attacking fielding all day. Once again we had managed to produce a reasonable start and Jono and Danny (sprouter) Adams got us to 2 for 60 odd. Then a mix of fortunes saw us again loose wickets at regular times and we struggled to get on top of some tight bowling. Only Jonno, Sprouter and Collo had any real time at the crease and although both Dazza and Scott Huntley appeared in no trouble, once out we found it difficult to turn over the strike and fell 7 short. We must remain positive and collect 6 points from this next game as you don't have to do much wrong to loose games by 4 and 7 runs as we have in the last couple of games. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI
Having won the last couple games, we were quite confident going into the one-dayer against Elsternwick, but it wasn’t to be. We once again won the toss and elected to bat in very blustery conditions at Elsternwick and Loonie and Al Milne got us off to a decent start before Milney fell and the score was 1/30. Milney’s departure saw us lose a flurry of quick wickets as has happened to often in recent matches, and in less than 10 overs we went from 0/30 to 5/37. In a largely uninspiring batting performance captain Brett Clark played a characteristic steadying hand of 51 runs getting us to a decent total of 147 in the 45th over. Bowling in the windy conditions was not an easy task, and was made all the more difficult by a solid and very impressive display of batting by the Elsternwick captain who took the game away from us. Neil Pendry took 2/36 off 8 overs and was the only of our bowlers to take more than one wicket in a match that was lost by not putting enough runs on the board when we had the chance. Elsternwick 5/148 in the 38th over.
Matt de Neef
Round 7 - Bayswater vs Endeavour Hills 1st XI
After batting for some 10 overs Jonno and Collo appeared in no trouble but losing them both in the same over was a nasty surprise. Then Dean Connell and Scott Huntley set about setting a target until we lost Deano (first 3 batsmen all dismissed on 14 runs). Matt Cunningham then joined Scott and the runs started to flow freely, then Matt appeared to tear a quad muscle and required a runner. Matt continued to score feely until he was out for a well made 35. This bought Danny and Scott together and they set about making a large target with Sprouter hitting the ball very cleanly and Scotty continuing to run very well between the wickets. Scotty departed with 6 overs to spare after making a tremendous 92 bringing Ollie to the crease. After Ollie hit the second ball he faced for six it appeared the onslaught would not stop and by close of play we had complied 5/303 with Sprouter and Ollie remaining not out on 102 and 28 respectively. Sprouter’s knock came from only 61 balls and was as good a display of clean hitting I have seen in some time. Defending 303 was not going to be easy but breakthroughs came at regular times and at tea and a heavy rain interruption the home side where 6/80. After the break a couple of dropped catches stopped us from putting any further pressure on the Hills’ lower order and some good batting saw Endeavour finally all out for 228. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI Having lost our previous game in the one-dayer against Elsternwick the Sunday before our clash against Endeavour Hills, we were keen to get back on the winner’s list. Clarky lost the toss and we were forced to bowl first to an Endeavour Hills batting line-up that seemed to get stronger as the day progressed. When the Hills were 4/30 after 33 overs we were very confident of bowling them out well inside their prescribed 80 overs, but a 74 run stand for the 5th wicket slowed our efforts. Some brilliant, tight bowling towards the end of the innings saw Endeavour Hills all out for 144 in the 77th over of the day. Once again Liam “Ernie Disco” Thomas was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/24 off his 21 overs after having the truly superb figures of 1/2 off his first 14 overs, including 12 maidens. Reeves took 2/18 off 8 overs, Nipper claimed 2/21 off 13 overs and Andy Bartle bowled a couple of fast and tight spells, finishing with 1/23 off 18.2 overs.
145 was always going to be a relatively simple total to chase down, but the runs still needed to be got, and our main focus was on getting off to a solid start unlike in previous matches. We lost Reevesy when the score was 9 and Hivesy when the score was 39 shortly after he had torn a groin muscle attempting a second run. At 3/59 after 26 overs a cool head was needed to get us over the line, and who better to come in than John Salter Snr. Salts and Milney put on a brilliant 126 for the 4th wicket to see us pass Endeavour Hills’ score quite comfortably. Milney departed next for a wonderfully compiled 77 runs (including 3 huge hook shots for six, two of which ended up on the other side of Bayswater Rd) while Salts continued to punish the bowling before falling just short of a well deserved century on 94 runs. Bayswater 5/223 and a fantastic victory to lead us into the new year. Well done boys, and in particular to Ernie, China and Salts. Matt de Neef 3rd XI
1st week won the toss and decided to bat on a reasonably friendly batting track, overall a very disappointing team effort to finish with only 193. Josh led the way with a good 44 with a few others in the 20s GH, JS, RW but not capitalizing on their starts, however reading the scores on Sunday showed we were the highest score in our division. We then had to bowl a min of 6 overs and Daniel got us off to a start capturing the first wicket to go in overnight with EH at 1/9. 2nd week we managed to keep the pressure on all their batsman which produced some rash shots of which we took full advantage with some good catching and fielding. Daniel bowled all but 5 overs from one end which was a great effort producing the excellent figures of 5/72 off 17 overs, he was ably supported by Phil Milne with figures of 2/25 off 14.3 overs. I think Phil was a bit unlucky but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Gaz chipped in with a very important wicket (1/13 off 4) and Salty’s figures of 0/11 off 5 were also very important to us in their innings. Gareth unfortunately ran into someone who was smashing us everywhere and his figures of 0/26 off 6 probably don’t reflect his effort overall. A good win to go into the break sitting up there on the ladder only means we need to now work much harder to keep all the opposition teams beneath us. You can be sure they will all be hunting us after Xmas but I also know the spirit, attitude and desire in our team is second to none and we definitely won't back away from any contests facing us. Thanks to Scott Wilson for subbing for us (2 great slips catches) which may help influence a decision to keep the creams on. I hope everyone at BCC and all other clubs have a great and safe Xmas and New Year, I look forward to seeing you all in 06 (and on Boxing Day). Tony Sheehan 4th XI The 4ths played against Endeavour Hills last match and we compiled 10/286. Great perfomances by:
Warrick Kane 102 Matt Hayhurst 57 Rohan Pollard 32 Rod Smith 37
Endeavour Hills 10 / 185
Our Bowling:
Froggy 2/51 26 overs
Matt H 2/51 21 overs ( 2 catches )
Shane 0/10 9 overs
Harro 1/20 12 overs
Roman Maus (“Knackers” ) took a great catch at the end to win the game for us. This was the best team performance prior to Christmas by this group of very mixed ages. Let's look forward to getting a couple of wins early in the new year and then give the four a go. John Hayhurst
Round 8 - Bayswater vs Mount Waverley
1st XI After losing the toss Bayswater were asked to field, Stranger broke through in his 2nd over but the ‘Waters bowling attack still had to keep a good line and length to contain the Mount’ bats. After around 35 overs Mount Waverley were 3/95 and appeared set to create a large target but further tight bowling by Stranger, Wilhelm and new father Skeeta saw Mount Waverley post 9/152. Bowling figures where Stranger 3/17, Skeeta 2/31 and Ollie 2/35 all from 9 overs. Our run chase did not start as well as we had planned losing both Jonno and Collo early. This bought the inform Sprouta to the wicket where he continued his good form to make 45 in his usual quick time. Although we lost wickets at regular times we continued to set the game up and Ollie capped of a great game with 35 not out along with Skeeta 19 not out and both saw us home with just over 3 overs to spare. Thanks to the Mount Waverley cricket club for supporting their team in the first of what we hope is many inaugural games held between the two clubs. Thanks very much to Chris and Marc from Regent finance for sponsoring this game and many more in the future! Regent Finance are specialists in:
Motor Vehicles, Trucks & Vans, Caravans, Boats, Motor Bikes, Plant & Equipment, and Commercial & Residential Property. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI Clarky won the toss again and on a green but firm Mount Waverley pitch decided that we would bat first. In Al Milne’s absence we were in need of an opening bat so Brett padded up and as usual, did a fantastic job in getting us off to a great start. He and Reevesy put on 60 for the first wicket (with Ad almost tripling his aggregate for the season with 20) before Hivesy came to the crease after the fall of Adam’s wicket. Clarky was 5th out when the score was 102 and we were looking in good shape to post a competitive total. Some great batting from Nipper at the end, in partnership with “Squiz”, saw us post a very defendable score of 7/181 from out 45 overs. Clarky a characteristic 43 and Nipper 37* at the end.
We came out after tea determined to continue our winning streak but didn’t start too well after Bart bowled a spell he would probably rather forget – 0/26 off 4 overs. Too our credit though, we knuckled down and a steady flow of wickets followed. Squizzy Taylor in his come-back game as a bowler bowled a great tight spell claiming 3/17 off his 9 overs including the prized scalp of ex-Bayswater 2nd XI player (and good mate of Squiz’s) “Sheiks” Ramanayake. 14 year-old Darren “Richie” Dewar continued his good form with the ball taking 3/15 off 7.5 overs- 2 of which were caught-and-bowled. Chris Cunningham took two fantastic stumpings in his first game back after shoulder surgery and Nipper rounded off a great day taking 2/22 off 9 – Mount Waverley all out for 115. A great win, and one which will hopefully help us to keep momentum leading into the business end of the season.
Matt de Neef 3rd XI Winning the toss and batting on a good track, our start wasn't really convincing with both Loony and Salty missing out. Wokka stayed for a good 28. Josh also failed and at that time we were struggling against an honest but not dangerous attack. Dave Glover batting at 4 made a solid contribution, compiling 22 runs which steadied the ship midway through the innings before Grant put that to one side with a hard hitting 41* and we finished at 5/159.
Phil Milne got us off to a great start with 2 early wickets from which they never recovered but all the bowlers shared the spoils and after their 45 overs they finished 8/71 not really ever making a chase of it.
(Please Note: In the pursuit of modesty, Tony failed to mention his 59* at toward the end of the innings. Mr Sheen obviously hasn't lost it!)
Tony Sheehan 4th XI The 4ths ventured down to Pinewood Reserve to play second placed Waverley Blues last Saturday. One end of the track was under-prepared so when I won the toss I sent them in to bat.
Waverley 10/126 ( excellent bowling & fielding by our men.)
Matt Hayhurst: 4/21 off 9 overs (including a HAT TRICK)
Rohan Pollard: 2/6 off 4 overs
We were 5/52 but opener Mark Harrison stood firm to make a well compiled 32. New man Steve Kennedy (16 years old) took 1/16 and also a well compiled 32. Matt Hayhurst scored 52* - a clear winner of the man of the match award. We still see ourselves in 5th position on the ladder, hopefully this match against Kingston Saints we can notch up another win and make it 3 in a row and get closer to Croydon & Oakleigh. John Hayhurst
Round 9 - Bayswater vs Kingston Saints1st XI In Darryl Stranger’s 200th consecutive VSDCA game for Bayswater, the Kingston Saints won the toss and elected to bat on a perfect day for cricket. After a slow start we managed to get on top thanks largely to the efforts of Matt Jonson and Ollie Wilhelm who are both coming good with the ball. A couple of grassed chances enabled the Saints batsmen to scramble to 178 at the close of play. Mat Jonson with 5 wickets was the pick of our bowlers and it was great to see Jonno at his best yet again. The scheduled 43 degrees for the following Saturday made cricket unpleasant and what was to follow did not help matters. A solid start given the conditions saw us at 3/90 at team. Scott Huntley continued his good form to get to around 30 and unfortunately for us Sprouter (Danny Adams) looked out of sorts on a slow low wicket and could not get going. After tea Matt Jonson and Ollie Wilhelm saw us through to 3/150 before the remaining overs saw us lose 7/23 to be all out 3 runs short. Apart from dropping a game away from the final 6, we all let down club legend Darryl Stranger in his 200th game and Matt Jonson lifted the Kinston Saints clubhouse roof with his after match speech. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI On the first day of our two-dayer against the Kingston Saints, we lost the toss and were sent into field. Bart and Ernie got us off to a great start early, Andy taking his first wicket in the 5th over of the day, Kingston Saints 1/3. Consistent, tight bowling all day saw us bowl out the Saints for a meagre total of 10/126. Andy Bartle bowled two great spells taking 3/20 of his 16 overs but the destroyer with the ball was Neil Pendry who was at his wily best taking 6/44 off 21.1 overs. Chasing 127 in week 2 was always going to be a simple task if we did all the right things, and a 46 run opening partnership between Steve Loonstra and John Salter Jnr made the task even easier. Great positive batting from all of the top order saw us pass their score with 42 overs left in the day. The stumps were pulled early however due to the heat – Bayswater 7/218. A great batting performance with everybody contributing – Loonstra 42, Salter Jnr 21, Hives 18, Salter Snr another deft innings chalking up 65 runs, and Squiz 21*. A very solid all-round performance and one that will continue to cement our position at the top of the ladder. Matt de Neef 3rd XI First week batted for an end result of all out 210 not a good effort, once again some starts but no-one went on with it. Second week was always going to be a struggle but the really positive thing was we tried our hardest all day and didn't concede anything, everyone is to be congratulated for their efforts on what was a prick of a day. Thanks to Scott Wilson for subbing for us. Tony Sheehan 4th XI We won the toss and we batted , before we knew it we were 2 out for one run. 1 hour later 6/61 not looking too good . Matt Hayhurst was at the crease with John Hayhurst , we saw a great comeback for the team by these two (father & son) Matt went on to make 124 & John made 84 in a partnership of 157. Our total went to 10/284 and we only faced 59.5 overs for this total. There was 20 overs to complete the day and Kingston finished at 3/38. The next Saturday we got them 10/95 (the wickets were spread around). We put them back in and they finished the day and 2 / 74. We are 6th on the ladder. John Hayhurst
Round 10 - Bayswater vs Caulfield1st XI After losing the day’s play on Saturday and a little time on Sunday, all had agreed to play a 38 over-a-side game. Caulfield won the toss and elected to bat in conditions that where quite humid and I must admit we had no idea what they would produce. Ollie started well with the ball and captured 2 wickets in his first spell to have the Caulfield line up at 2/15. Then a mini fight back saw Caulfield get to 2/40 before Darryl Stranger struck in his final over and claim the wicket of Richo caught at backward square. Despite the further loss of wickets Caulfield continued to keep the run rate ticking and managed a competitive 8/123 after 38 overs and on a pitch that was doing a bit. After losing Mark Collins in the first, Scott Huntley and Danny Adams where together and Sprouter made sure we stayed ahead of the required run rate while he was at the crease. Danny made 44 in a very controlled manner and struck the ball very well. He was well supported by Huntley (29 runs), Darryl Stranger (21*) who enjoyed batting up the order, and Mat Jonson (6*) who managed to hit a six to get us over the line with just under 3 overs to spare. Rob Baldwin 2nd XI We played Caulfield this week in what proved to be a rather annoying weekend barring the 27 over game which eventuated. After Saturday had been called off due to the bad weather, play on Sunday did not start till 3. After what was not our best performance in the field Caulfield made 145; a fairly decent total that needed some chasing down. Barts taking 1/15 off 6 was probably our best bowler with Salts Snr chipping in with a wicket – 1/9 off 2. Our run chase did not start as well as one would hope with the loss of an early wicket, but that brought Hivesy to the crease which started a great partnership of 98 (not 100, Hivesy unlucky) between Hivesy and a very in-form Looney. Gav made 43 and Looney a sensational 60 including his first 6 ever - Congrats Looney! A steady 22* from Salts Snr steered us home and we got the runs in the last over. A very important and much needed win in what was a danger game with it only being 27 overs. It keeps us near the top where we should be. Al Milne 3rd XI After a lengthy rain delay, play got underway with us bowling first to Caulfield. After about 45 minutes though, rain intervened again and play was cancelled with Caulfield at 1/23 – 3 points each. Matt de Neef 4th XI [No play due to rain]
Round 11 - Bayswater vs Noble Park1st XI Noble Park won the toss and elected to bat in very good conditions for cricket and after a steady start got to 40 without loss. Ollie got the break through followed by Jono and we soon had Noble on their heals at 3/48 from 23 overs. Good steady bowling was the order of the day and Skeeta bowled a great spell straight after tea to capture a wicket and also have Gavin Hurley dropped. Struggling to clean up the tail was again the problem for us but Ollie and Jono both where up to the task claiming 4 and 3 wickets each. After wet conditions during the week we expected our task to very difficult but the conditions of the ground where once again perfect. At tea we where 4/90 and things where still tight. We lost Darryl Stranger not long after tea and further loss of wickets had us at 8/140. Collo batting down the list made 23 before losing his wicket and when Damien Fleming took the last wicket we fell 17 runs short. Mat Cunningham was the star with the bat with 50 odd and Ollie and Collo also contributed with scores in the 20's. A disappointing result but we remained positive all day and can take that into the final two rounds. Rob Baldwin
