Season 05/06 Junior Match Reports

Round 1

U17

Congratulations to Ryan Wilson and Jason Stephens, elected captain and vice captain by their team-mates for this season.
We played The Basin who were quietly confident having secured some new recruits for the season. They won the toss and elected to bat. After some hasty application of sawdust to the bowlers ends at Glen Park Michael Van Rooy and Ryan Salvesen opened the attack a little nervously.
We conceded quite a few sundries early in the piece before Mitchell Galvin was introduced and struck in his 3rd over - The Basin 1/36 off 12 and going well.
We managed to tighten it up and with 2 run-outs and another 2 wickets to Mitchell (3/8) and 1 to Jason Stephens we finished their 25 overs at 6 for 71. This was a reasonable score given the very slow field however we were quietly confident.
Mark Harrison & Ryan Wilson opened the innings and got us off to a slow steady start with Harro falling with the score at 19 for 11. A series of short but profitable partnerships developed and we were never really challenged, moving ahead of The Basin in the 21st over.
Ryan batted solidly for 28 and was 4th out when the score was 61. Ryan Salvesen contributed a well run 14 and Mitch, David Baldock and Michael Van Rooy all belted their way to give us a comfortable win.
A good start guys! Well done.

We knew that in the first few rounds of the season we would have to do some experimenting due to new players and players coming up from the under 13’s. Mulgrave won the toss and decided to bat. We didn’t bowl as well as we should have, giving Mulgrave 29 extras, to make their total 108. We used 8 bowlers, with the best bowling going to Rowan Walker 3/16.
In our run chase we lost some early wickets, with Jesse Yarde doing a good job holding the top order together. It looked like we were in trouble after 18 overs, but thanks to 2 boys who fought back, Kyle Nevill not out on 31 and Rowan Walker on 27 gave us a result of a tie for the first round.
Well done boys!!!!

A great start to the year with everyone contributing in some form or another. The bowlers all excellent with Mitchell Tampaline taking 2 for 3 off 1.4 overs, Bryce Galvin 2/2 off 2 overs and Mitchell Jackson, Sean Dalton, Martin Beilharz & Steve Atkinson all taking a wicket apiece. Rowville final score – all out for 17!
The batting was just as good with some outstanding performances from newcomer Chris Anderson (20 retired), Trent Phillips (23 retired), Bryce Galvin (20 retired) and some good support from Mitchell Jackson (9 no) and Matthew Condy (6 no), our final score reached 3 for 95 off our 25 overs.
A fantastic effort by all concerned.

Round 2

U17

Up against Mulgrave at Mulgrave – a team we’ve had mixed results against in the last few seasons! Mully won the toss and batted. Due to some tight bowling on a fast ground from Benny J, Matt Hawes and Mitch Galvin they were restricted to 45 off the first 17 overs. Then Mitch snagged one clean bowled and Michael Van Rooy took 2 in an over and suddenly they had slumped to 3/59. Unfortunately we didn’t capitalize and our next wicket wasn’t captured until they’d reached 100. It was in the balance however Mulgrave batted with a combination of aggression and common sense to post 6/163 off their 50 overs, with final wickets to Salvo, Ben Jackson and a great run out by Ryan Wilson. A solid total but very gettable the next week! Best of the bowlers were Mitch 1/8 off 7, Ben 1/13 off 10 and Michael 2/27 off 7. Noticeable again in the oppositions score was 14 bye and leg byes and 11 wides and no balls! 25 runs to them PLUS another 2 overs! The following week the weather wasn’t so good however the grass had been cut. We needed to bat the 50 overs to win the game. Ryan and Harro opened but after 12 very tight overs we were a disastrous 3/26 with Michael also back in the pavilion. A small partnership between Mitch and Jason Stephens took us to 4/44 however we immediately lost Salvo to slump to 5/44. We needed a partnership and Jason and Dave Baldock worked very hard to get to 90 before Stevo was out for a well compiled 30. Unfortunately David followed at 98 for 17 patient runs and not long after we’d capitulated – Bays all out for 96. The shame is at 35 overs we were 2 runs in advance of their score (4/102 v 8/104) – but an extra 4 wickets really cost us. They also bowled a tight line and length with only 8 sundries in total. We need to learn these lessons if we’re to challenge these guys in the finals.
Some positives but plenty to work on.

Round 2 saw us play The Basin. With a team effort in the field we held The Basin to 89. With a good bowling effort going to Jesse Yarde 5/12 off 8 overs. Unfortunately the following week our batting wasn’t as good as it should have been with us being all out for 85. Jesse making highest score on 18 and Ash having a great go on 14.

Another terrific performance by the whole side . We were up against Mulgrave who have beaten us in the last couple of seasons. We lost the toss and Mulgrave batted first and our bowling was first class with all bowlers maintaining an excellent line and length. In particular Mitchell Jackson with 2/8 off 6 overs , Sean Dalton 2/16 off 4 overs & Chris Anderson, Martin Beilharz, Luke Meddings, Mitchell Tampaline all taking 1 wicket each. Mulgrave’s final score = 139.
We began our run chase in wet and overcast conditions and again all batsmen were terrific. Luke Meddings (5) and Bryce Galvin (18) opened and set the standard for the rest of the team to follow. Chris Anderson showed his class with a well made 27 and Trent Phillips 35 fantastic runs. Mitchell Jackson(24 retired) and Hayden Schroeder (10 retired) saw us past Mulgrave’s score and we ended up 4/153.
Well done to all the boys.

Round 3

U17

At home to Monbulk this week we encountered a plucky side with only 10 men. Again the opposition won the toss (3 out of 3 Ryan!!) and they decided to bat. Ben and Matt Hawes opened the bowling well and restricted Monbulk early with a smart catch by the captain off Ben and Matt clean bowling the #3 bat to leave them 2/22 off the first 10 overs. A partnership developed taking them to 47 before Harro took a blinder off Mitch. 2 overs later and Mitch blew the game apart with 2 in 3 balls and then another 2 in 2 balls in his 6th over. Monbulk all out for 114 off 41 overs. Bowling – Mitch a phenomenal 5/12 off six overs with support from Ben 1/13, Matt 1/11 , Harro 1/19  and Stevo 1/3. A great effort (although again we gave the opposition 31 sundries!! Including 23 wides and no balls). This will kill us against stronger teams unless we address it at training. We had a poor start to the chase with Ryan falling LBW for 0 in the third over however Harro and newcomer Kevin Clark took us to the close of day 1 at 1/29.
The next week we progressed confidently to 66 before Harro fell for a typically punishing 34. Stevo joined Kevin at the crease and a feature of their great 78 run partnership was their running between the wickets – turning 2’s in to 3’s and so on – great stuff guys. By the time Kevin fell for a magic 67 in his first innings for Baysie, we’d reached 151 and the race was on to gather more quick runs. Mitch and Dave Baldock each shared partnerships with Stevo before the innings was declared closed at an imposing 4/202 off only 36 overs (at 5.5 per over!!) Stevo a very impressive 47 not out (sincere apologies from the coaching staff for the declaration……) We had a crack at them again for 17 overs but only managed 3/59 with Ben most impressive – 2/13 off 5 overs. A good win against a team we should (and did) beat comprehensively.
Well done guys!

Playing Upwey at Upwey we batted first and batted well, making 162 all out with Jake making a great 48, Josh 32 and Tyler Munro on 17. Again our second week let us down, with Upwey hitting the winning runs in the last over to win 9/166. Best bowling performance goes to Josh Cole 3/14.

Bayswater won the toss and batted & in fine conditions decided to bat. We started slowly and lost early wickets, but then we steadied due to some excellent batting from Chris Anderson 41 no and Hayden Schroeder 21. The bottom order capitalised  on the good work from above to add valuable runs – Martin Beilharz (9 runs), Mitchell Tampaline (12) and Mitchell Grubb (17 runs). In the end a very competitive 175 runs.
The bowling and fielding was again terrific with all bowlers contributing in some way, Trent Phillips with 5/12 off 7 overs including a hatrick was sensational! Not far behind, Hayden Schroeder grabbed 3/15 off 6 and was well supported  by Mitchell Jackson 1/4 off 4  and Luke Meddings 1/5 off 3 overs. In the end we bowled them out for 132. Another terrific effort by all concerned.
Well done boys.

Round 4

U17

Away at Knox Gardens – top side along with Mulgrave and keen to get at us as again after beating our U15’s narrowly last year. We won the toss and batted with a lush outfield and slow pitch.
An inauspicious start saw Kevin out 4th ball but despite this we managed to settle down and it wasn’t until the 22nd over we lost wicket number 2 with Harro out caught for 29.  2/64 at nearly three runs per over and we were ready to press the advantage. Unfortunately it was not to be and we lost 2 wickets at 72 (Galvin 2, Stephens 34) and despite a 48 run partnership another 2 at 120 when Michael and David both got out for 22.So, at 6/120 with 7 overs to go we had to bat it out and post a respectable score.
Again we struggled with the pressure of scoring and maintaining our wickets and although we reached 50 overs we managed only 141 runs. We had 2 run outs in the innings showing once again a need to develop stronger voices and better understanding between the wickets. We also desperately need someone to hang around for 30 or 40 overs to build an innings around. Too many starts – not enough conversions!
The following week rain intervened and the game was eventually called off at 10.30 without a ball being bowled. They certainly felt cheated and I guess only time will tell whether we have the capacity to beat them – we play them again in round 6!

Scott Wilson & Gary Galvin

U15

Taking on Rowville who were on top the ladder with a solid bowling performance, holding them to 8/143 off 50 overs with Tyler Hall bowling well with 2/10 off 7 overs. Unfortunately the second week was a wash out.

Ian Atkinson

Up against Upwey at Millers Reserve we won the toss and sent them in. It was very pleasing to see some fine bowling and some excellent fielding from all concerned, in particular Steve Atkinson with 2 fine catches and Sean Dalton 1 catch. The bowlers all bowled well with again Steve Atkinson starring with 4/6 off 7 overs and Mitchell Grubb 2/3 off 4 overs. In the end Upwey were dismissed for 78 runs.
Our turn to bat and we were in a bit of trouble early, but some sensible batting from Chris Anderson (15 runs), Bryce Galvin (33 runs retired) and Mitchell Jackson (15*)  saw us past their score and finally making 5 for 95 off 29 overs before rain finished play for the morning. Well done again boys, keep up the good work and the rewards will come.

Phil Jackson

Round 5

U17

We won the toss and batted at home against Knoxfield and after a slow start (0/7 off the first 4 overs) Harro and Mitch let loose and we raced to 60 before Mark was again out after a good start for 25. This brought Stevo in with dynamic results as he and Mitch put on a 141 run partnership in the next 21 overs. Unfortunately Mitch was out for a punishing 88 just 12 short of a well deserved century (15 4’s!!!!!!) - the score was 2/201 with Stevo 57*.
Ryan was next in and together with Jason they shared an 80 run partnership in the next 11 overs! It was fantastic to watch with Stevo belting the poor Knoxfield bowlers for 12 4’s and 3 huge 6’s. He eventually had to retire for a magnificent 100!!! By this time Ryan had contributed a run-a-ball 33 n/o and we closed our innings at 4/297.
Week 2 and we didn’t know what to expect. After 11 overs however, the game ceased to be a contest as Matty Hawes and Ben Jackson held them to 19 runs in the first 11 overs! A wicket to Ben, a run out to Mitch and a first ball cleaned bowled to Michael Van Rooy saw Knoxfield slump to 3/23 after 12 overs. Liam Graffen was introduced and after 3 overs he had the enviable figures of 1/5 with a cleaned bowled wicket to his credit! Kevin Clark also made the most of his first overs of the year with 1/6 off 2 overs. Some lusty hitting from their middle order batsmen put some much needed runs on the board but with only 9 batsmen we only needed 8 wickets! And so at 5/93 off 29 overs Stevo (Century Man!!) was introduced into the attack. And how does a person surpass scoring 100 runs when they get a chance to bowl?   Simple, bowl 4 balls and pick up 3 for 0 including a HATRICK!!! With the last 2 batsmen cleaned bowled…….Talk about the Midas touch. We sent them in again with 17 overs to be bowled but could not get the early breakthrough we needed and they finished the day at 3/60 with Ben, Liam and Ryan taking a wicket each.
No prizes for guessing the man-of-the-match but well done also to Dave Baldock who collected 4 catches. Well done guys a super effort and we look forward to next match against Knox Gardens.

Round 5 saw us playing Knoxfield at Knoxfield. Due to bad habits with our fielding and bowling, we allowed Knoxfield to make a total of 4/223. We gave them a record of 62 extras. Our batting also suffered with only 2 players making double figures, Jamie on 28 and Rowan with 18; This made us all out for 101. All our batsmen need to realise that shot selection is the key.

Ian Atkinson

U13

We won the toss and elected to bat against a very determined and professional outfit. It was Bayswater (2nd) against Eildon Park (3rd). Their bowlers all bowled a great line and length and they taught us a lesson with some wonderful field placings which in turn made it very hard for our batsmen to penetrate. To our credit we showed great determination and batted for 47 overs. Top scores came from Hayden Schroeder with 24, Trent Phillips 22 and 12 runs from Chris Anderson and Martin Beilharz made the score a respectable 108 all out.
Bayswater started well having Eildon Park 3 for 29 with all the bowlers and fieldsmen doing a fine job. But as often happens 2 batsmen combined well which caused us to drop  our concentration & enthusiasm and we fell away. The best of the bowlers were Luke Meddings 2/8 off 6 overs and Sean Dalton with 1/6 off 7 overs. In the end we bowled 58 overs and had Eildon Park 8/144. Not too bad an effort when looking back.

Round 6

U17

We lost the toss and Knox Gardens elected to bat. The weather was kinder this week and we set about bowling this side out who rely heavily on their top 2 or 3 batsmen. The grass was thick and runs would be difficult to get. Unfortunately we didn’t get an early breakthrough but held them to three an over for the first 10 with Ben & Matt bowling reasonably tightly.
We needed a breakthrough which came in the 14th over when Mitch grabbed an LBW. 1/42 and we needed another. Again we bowled reasonably well without being dangerous and they moved on to 66 in the 22nd over before Mitch grabbed the important wicket of Butcher for 29.
Here was our opportunity to get amongst them but Knox knuckled down and at 3 per over took the score to 91 when the 3rd wicket fell cleaned bowled to Michael Van Rooy. Ryan clean bowled number 4 and at 4/100 we had them on toast. Knox put on 20 for the 5th wicket partnership until Mitch got another favourable LBW decision. Still, at 5/120 and 10 overs to go the game was in the balance. A couple of small partnerships kept the run rate at 3 an over until a runout and an LBW to Ben J  left the score at 7/138. Another partnership took their score to 156 before the 3 card trick arrived – Stevo collecting another 3 wickets clean bowled – this time in 4 balls! – missing out on another hat-trick! Best of the bowling was Mitch 3/13 off 9, Stevo 3/29 off 9 and support from Ryan, MVR and Ben with 1 wicket apiece.
Here was our chance – an opportunity to beat the 2nd side. We started with a bang, Mitch and Harro running along at 4 runs per over before Harro fell just as he was getting right on top for 33 – 1/63 in the 16 over. We should have romped it in from here however Mitch lucked out for 27 in the very next over 2/67. Ryan W came and went 3/72 and we started to look shaky.
4/86 when Stevo was caught, and then a procession of wickets at 89, 108, 111, 123, 125 and all out for 129 in the 45th over. The most disappointing things – we didn’t bat 50 overs and after a few good starts (Mitch 27, Harro 33, Jason 14, Kevin 17) – nobody went on to make 50! We also gave away an extra 9 sundries – expensive in a close match. No excuses – they deserved to win.

Scott Wilson & Gary Galvin

Round 6 saw us play Knox Gardens. With very steady and good batting we made 194, with Tyler Munro an excellent 52 not out and Jessie Yarde a good 34 at the tail end. The boys let the pressure off the following week with dropped chances and our bowling was a bit short early, which our boys will learn from, as we lost the game in the last over of the day. Knox making 9/195. Another close loss. Fantastic bowling from Kyle Nevill in his second spell 5/34.

Ian Atkinson

U13

Bayswater won the toss and elected to bat at a fairly slow Miller’s Reserve. The boys got off to a slow start, being 3 for 29 at one stage before consolidating and finishing the innings in fine style. All the batsmen contributed with Chris Anderson making 17, Trent Phillips 22, Sean Dalton 14 and Mitchell Jackson a fine 40 retired. Score at the close of play 9/152.
Upwey’s turn to bat and all the Bayswater bowlers bowled a fantastic line and length, never really allowing Upwey in with a chance. The star with the ball no doubt was Mitchell Grubb with 3 for 8 off 3.2 overs! Others to do well were Hayden Schroeder 2/4 off 4, Chris Anderson 1/4 off 3 overs and Mitch Jackson with 1/3 off 4 overs.
Well done to all the team.

Phil Jackson

Round 7

U17

A one day game to welcome the New Year, against a traditionally tough side. We needed to win well to maintain our chances of playing in finals. Our current percentage continues to give us a small advantage over sides with a similar number of wins/losses.
Glen Park was almost a dustbowl and as fast as lightning – therefore a score of 140-150 would be required (at 6 an over) to be competitive. Johnson Park won the toss and elected to bat and they were off to a flyer with a towering 6 off the 5th ball of the innings. A wicket to Jason in the second over and then another in the 5th (a great catch to Benny J deep on the boundary at fine leg) however put the brakes on. When Ryan W threw down the wicket for a great run out shortly after, the opposition were in trouble at 3/26.
Not long after Mitch was introduced into the attack and his first over was eventful with a terrific runout courtesy of Michael Van Rooy to Mitch and then cleaned bowled a batsman with the last ball. At 5/34 we should have rolled them for under 70 and at 7/50 we were on target. However the last pair put on 26 runs to eventually post 91. Again we posted too many bowling sundries with 7 wides and 3 no-balls – 10 extra runs and 10 extra balls.
Best bowling, Jason 2/13 off 3, Mitch 2/5 off 5 overs and Ryan W 2/9 off 3.
Newcomer Luis Wain opened our innings with Harro and wasted no time getting into the swing of things blasting their way to 0/30 off the first 2 overs with Luis taking 18 off the first over! What a start! Harro was first out for 11 and Luis eventually for a fantastic debut 38 (4x4’s and 3 massive 6’s!!) – 2/58 after only 5 overs.
However there was no respite for the opposition as Jason Stephens and Dave Baldock took the score to 116 before Dave was out for a patient 17. Stevo was playing another blinder and his eventual score of 55 retired contained 10x4’s and a 6. Ryan Salvesen finished on 18 not out and looked to be gaining some form and Ben Jackson contributed 29 – his highest of the year.
After 25 overs our score was 5/184. No doubt we’ll play tougher teams but this was a comprehensive win. Well done guys.

Playing the top side for our first game back from the Christmas break and our boys still in holiday mode, saw our worst bowling performance of the year. Lysterfield made 1/160 off 25 overs. We changed our batting order to give others a chance to show what they can do. But this didn’t quite work out, with us being 4 for 17. Then Will Miller put his head down to make a good 16 and then Tyler Munro 40 not out and Jamie Atkinson 32 not out started to put us in a good position till the game ended 5 overs short because of time with us on 7/111. Very good fight back boys. Keep up the good work.

Ian Atkinson

U13

A one day game back after the Christmas break and I must admit to being a bit worried we might have been a bit rusty but this was never the case as Bayswater amassed 2 for 131 off 25 overs. The stars with the bat being Bryce Galvin 24 patient runs retired,  Mitchell Jackson 24 runs retired, Trent Phillips 20 runs retired, Chris Anderson 16 runs and Luke Meddings and Hayden finishing off well with 9 and 7 not out respectively.
As in the game before Christmas all the bowlers did well, backed by some good catches and some fine fielding, eventually dismissing UFTG for 84 runs.
A great effort by Mitchell Jackson taking 4/2 off 3 overs and ably backed by Trent Phillips 2 for 6 off 3 overs and Sean Dalton, Steve Atkinson, Mitchell Tampaline and Martin Beilharz taking one wicket each.
Good work guys.

Phil Jackson

Round 8

U17

Bayswater won the toss and batted on a day with some expectation of drizzle or rain later. The ground was lush and so running every run hard would be the order of the day. Luis and Harro again opened the innings but Mark was out early for 4. 1 for 23. Luis and Stevo moved along at nearly 5 an over before Luis was out caught for 32. Mitch came and went for 10 and when Kevin was out caught for a duck we were 4/90 off 20 overs and in danger of again wasting a good start and not seeing out the overs. However this time Ryan W and Stevo combined to add 56 for the 5th wicket with Jason once again dominant with 64 runs. Ryan was joined by Dave Baldock however lost his wicket for a patient 32.

Salvo and Dave took the score to 6/181 before rain caused the players to come off and no further play was possible. The next week and  we were able to bat for half of the remaining overs (4.1) and so Salvo and Dave ‘opened’  before Ryan was out for 10. Dave B added 11 including a huge 6 before our innings closed at a respectable 7-204.
Jason opened up the bowling and took a wicket in his 2nd over and together with Rhyno they held FTG to 1/17 off the first 8 overs. Changes saw Mitch pick up the 2nd wicket at 2/30 off 15. At this stage it appeared FTG would capitulate however they kept working away, maintaining their wickets and slowly challenging us. It wasn’t until the 35th over we got the next wicket when Liam Graffen was introduced and collected the 2 key wickets (batsmen set on 47 runs and 29 runs) to finish with the great figures of 2/11 off 6.
Kevin then joined in to collect 2 in 2 overs for figures of 2/12 off 5. Well done. Tidy spells by Michael Van Rooy (6 overs for 17), Ryan W (5 overs for 10), Mitch 1/11 off 6, Harro 0/16 off 5 saw FTG finish a long way behind on 6/125. In the end a strong win which sets up our clash with Eildon Park at home next week.
Well done guys.
