BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAYSWATER CRICKET CLUB INCORPORATED *Our Club was formed in 1903 with available record from 1928/29.* 1928/29: Affiliated with RDCA - one team. 1929/30: Affiliated with RDCA - two teams. 1930/31: Mr Kitchen paid 1 pound 5 shillings for puttin down mats at practice and on saturdays. 1932/33: New club formed - Bayswater North. 1933/34: Mr W Hearn made first Life Member. 1934/35: Affiliated with RDCA - one team. 1936/37: Me E Peglar made Life Member. 1945/46: Affiliated with RDCA - two teams. C Grade premiers. 1948/49: Club becomes foundation member of FTGDCA. 1950/51: A Grade premiers. 1957/58: Affiliated with FTGDcA - two teams and U15s. Mr P James made Life Member. 1958/59: Under 16s affiliated with RDCA. Mr F Verity made Life Member. 1959/60: Under 16s return to FTGDCA and are premiers. 1960/61: C Grade premiers. Mr W Bowen Snr made Life Member. 1961/62: Under 16s premiers. 1963/64: A Grade and Under 16s premiers. 1964/65: A Grade premiers. One more senior side added. 1966/67: A Grade premiers. 1967/68: Under 16s premiers. One more senior side added. 1968/69: A Grade premiers. 1969/70: A Grade premiers. Under 14s commence. 1971/72: Club moves to present ground. A grade and Under 16s premiers. 1972/73: Increase in Senior team numbers - now 5 seniors and 2 juniors. 1973/74: B Grade, C Grade and U14s premiers. Mr L Benoit and Mr N Wright made Life Members. 1975/76: 5 senior and 3 junior sides. U12s commence. Norm Wright appointed Club Captain. C Grade premiers 1976/77: 6 senior and 4 junior sides. N Wright again Club Captain. Turf wicket installed. Mr J Barry and Mr B Hayes made Life Members. Under 16s premiers. 1977/78: First year on turf. 2 senior team affiliated with ESCA, 4 senior and 4 junior sides affiliated with FTGDCA. Mr R Dunstan made Life Member. 1st XI B Turf, U14s and U12s premiers. Mr J Brazier appointed Club Captain. 1978/79: Another senior side in FTGDCA. Mr J Brazier again Club Captain. Mr P Fahy appointed junior coach. Mr G Wilson and Mrs S Hayes made Life Members. 1st XI A turf, C Grade, U16s, U14s and U12s premiers. 1979/80: Affiliations remain the same. Mr J Brazier Club Captain. Mr P Fahy and Mr J Hayhurst junior coaches. Mr P Fahy and Mr P Barry made Life Members. u16s and U12s premiers. 1980/81: Same affiliations. Mr J Crofts appointed Club Captain. U16s premiers and undefeated for 3 years. Mr J Hayhurst made Life Member. 1981/82: Reduction of one senior team. Mr J Crofts Club Captain. Mr J Hayhurst junior coach. B Grade, C Grade and U16s premiers - U16s forth successive season. 1982/83: Affiliations unchanged. Social rooms completed.Mr G Milne and Mr F Keamy made Life Members. Mr R Dunstan Club Captain.B Reserve premiers. 1983/84: Affiliations unchanged. Mr R Dunstan Club Captain. B Reserve premiers. 1984/85: One junior side added. Mr G Norbury Club Captain. 1st XI Senior Turf, B Grade and U16s Section 1 premiers. 1985/86: Mr G Norbury Captain/Coach. U16s Section 1 premiers. Mrs J Dunstan and Mrs K Barry made Life Members. 1986/87: Mr G Norbury Captain/Coach. B Turf, Neilson Sheild Res 3 (5th XI) and U12s premiers. Next season progress to VSDCA. 1987/88: First year in Sub-District. Mr C Arnold appointed Captain/Coach. Two teams affiliated with VSDCA. Mr Darley Ingelton appointed junior coach. Mrs H Hayhurst made Life Member. Two International games played at Bayswater, England Yuoth Team vs VCA/Crusaders and Secretariant Cricket Club of Bangalore, India vs combined Bayswater/Ringwood side. U16s and U12s premiers. 1988/89: Mr C Thwaites appointed Club Captain and Mr D Ingelton Club Coach. Mr J Dunstan made Life Member. One additional junior and one additional side affiliated with FTGDCA. The Club hosted a VFL football practice match between Richmond and North Melbourne. Construction of Social Rooms extensions commenced, total cost over $90,000 shared equally Bcc/BFC. 1989/90: Mr G Ingram appointed Captain/Coach. Mr P Creed and Mrs D Fahy awarded Life Membership. One additional junior side affiliated with FTGDCA. The Club hosted a Barclays Bank Under 19 Championship match between Vic and ACT. An AFL practice match between Collingwood and Footscray jointly hosted by Cricket and Football Clubs. Social rooms extension finished. 1990/91: Colin Thwaites appointed Captain Coach. David Brodtman Junior Coach. Ken McBride awarded Life Membership.Neilson Shield 6 premiers. Inaugural John Barry Shield match played at Bayswater between club 1st X1 and FTGDCA representative side with FTGDCA victors. Club hosted a match between the VCA under 17 team and CUOV under 21 side. 2nd X1 and RM Hatch U-14 sides made VSDCA finals but not successful. 1991/92: Darryl Stranger appointed Captain Coach, recruited from Ringwood VCA side. David Brodtmann reappointed Junior Coach/Co-ordinator. ToplineShield 4 and 6 sides both premiers. Main oval redrained and new carpets laid in social rooms.A "Hills Challenge" shield was struck for our VSDCA matches against Croydon with inaugural match won by Bayswater. 1992/93: Darryl Stranger reappointed captain coach and David Brodtmann reappointed as Junior coach/co-ordinator. Topline Shield 2, 5 and 7 sides under captains Rohan Pollard, Robert Hayhurst and Peter Fahy were all premiers. Further drainage works completed on main oval as well as upgrading of Club and Bar facilities. 2nd X1 defeated in semi final VSDCA and U/16s defeated in Grand Final. Shield natch against Croydon drawn with Darryl Stranger making 135 on first day and 2nd day washed out. 1993/94: Darryl Stranger reappointed captain coach. 1st X1 made VSDCA finals for first time since entering VSDCA. Puma Cup match win over Mornington but defeated by Fitzroy Doncaster in second round. VSDCA 2nd X1 won East Group Premiership and VSDCA Championship Final under captain Tony Sheehan. Veterans and U/16s premiers. Bayswater won John Barry shield against FTGDCA. Andrew Papst awarded Life Membership. 1994/95: Darryl Stranger reappointed captain/coach. 1st X1 made semi final and was beaten by Caulfield for second year running. No FTGDCA sides failed to make finals for first time in many years. U/16 side captained by Andrew Cassidy won Grand Final for 2nd consecutive year. Erection of shelter stand and scorers box completed. Ken Pollard awarded Life Membership. 1995/96: Darryl Stranger reappointed captain/coach. Veterans won flag. U/16s led by Andrew Cassidy completed hat trick of premierships under coach David Brodtmann. Construction of second turf wicket on No 2 oval commenced in January. Doug Smith awarded Life Membership. Laurie Benoit, Life Member and legend of Club, passed away. 1996/97: Darryl Stranger reappointed captain/coach. John Hayhurst appointed Junior coach. Opening ceremony for No 2 Oval in February attended by VCA, VSDCA, ESCA, FTGDCA, government and local government dignitaries. 3rd and 4th X1s join ESCA turf competition in B and D grades. One senior and 3 junior teams left in FTGDCA. 1st X1 finished top of ladder but failed in semi final. B Turf in ESCA and U/16s both defeated in Grand Final. Carlo Van Dreumel and Don Barnett awarded Life Memberships. Two life members, Barry Hayes and Jim Dunstan passed away during year. 1997/98 Darryl Stranger reappointed captain/coach. 3rd and 4th X1s join new VSDCA competition. 2 senior teams, 3 junior teams and Veterans now left in FTGDCA. Glen Park Cricket Club folds and merges with our Club. Establishment of "Allan/Benoit" Most Valuable Player medal. 4th X1 under captain Andrew Papst premiers, and Veterans captained by Robert Dunstan also premiers. 6th X1 captained by Steve Brown defeated in Grand Final. 3rd X1 defeated in semi. Lights installed on No 2 oval. Completion of asphalting of main oval surrounds.Franz Bakker and Betty Jackson awarded Life Memberships. 1998/99: John Salter appointed captain/coach ending 7 year reign of Darryl Stranger. 4 teams in VSDCA, 2 senior, 3 junior, 1 veteran side in FTGDCA. 1sts, 2nds, 3rds and 4ths all make VSDCA Grand Final - a first for a Sub District Club. All matches washed out with the 3rds, captained by Doug Smith, being only side in higher position and subsequently winning flag. 1st X1 were in winning position and were unlucky not to win Clubs first VSDCA senior flag. Veterans captained by Paul Creed won premiership ( 2 in a row). 6th X1 under captaincy of Steve Brown were again runners up. U/12 section 1 team also runners up. 1999/2000: John Salter reappointed captain/coach. 4 teams in VSDCA, 2 senior, 4 junior, 2 veterans teams FTGDCA. 3rd X1, 4th X1 made VSDCA finals. 6th X1 and Veterans (1) made FTGDCA finals. 4th X1 premiers and Veterans win 3rd premiership in succession. Tom Jackson awarded Life Membership. 2000/01: Rob Baldwin appointed Club coach with Darryl Stranger captain. Affiliations same as 99/00. 1st X1 runners up to Williamstown. 2nd X1 defeated in semi final. 6th X1 premiers. Veterans (1) runners up. Club refurbishment (painting, new tables and chairs) completed. Ross Junor and Darryl Stranger awarded Life Memberships. 2001/02: Mr R Baldwin reappointed coach. Mr D Stranger reappointed Captain. Affiliations as for 2000/2001. 1st XI and 6th XI runners-up. 5th XI Semi-finalists. U15 section 1, U15 section 2 and U13 premiers. M Jonson and M Cunningham selected in VSDCA team of the year. 2002/03: Stephen Atkins appointed as specialist coach. Darryl Stranger reappointed Captain. 5th XI moved to Mercantile turf competition. 6th XI premiers, 2nd XI runners-up. Barry Ensil won all senior awards and VSDCA Hatch Medal (first Bayswater player ever). John McKenzie awarded life membership. Committee Member Wes Kuczak died of heart attack. 2003/04: Darryl Stranger and John Salter appointed joint coaches. Barry Ensil appointed captain. Affiliations as for 2002/03. 3rd XI runners-up, 4th XI semi-finalists. U15 section 1 premiers, U13 section 2 premiers, U17 section 1 semi-finalists, U15 section 2 semi-finalists. Matt Jonson and Barry Ensil represent VSDCA in interstate match against Adelaide TCA. Club celebrates centenary with gala ball and naming of hard-wicket and turf-wicket Teams of the Century. History of the club published. Gary Hancock and Keith Abblitt awarded life-membership. Life member and 1stXI team manager and scorer Ross Junor died. 2004/05: Gary Ingram appointed Coach. Matt Jonson appointed captain. Affiliations as for 2003/04 except for sixth XI which was disbanded. First XI semi-finalists, U15/2 semi-finalists, U13 semi-finalists. Brian Hilditch and Tony Sheehan awarded life-memberships. 2005/06: Gary Ingram coach. Matt Jonson captain. Affiliations as for 2004/05, except for fifth XI which disbanded. Fourth XI premiers, second XI and third XI semi-finalists, U13s grand finalists. Matt Jonson won Hatch Medal for best player in VSDCA first XI; Matt Hayhurst won Hatch Medal for best player in VSDCA fourth XI. 2006/07: Gary Ingram reappointed coach. Darryl Stranger appointed captain. Affiliations as for 2005/06, plus a fifth XI in FTGDCA one-day competition. Second XI semi-finalistsl under 17s premiers; under 13s semi-finalists. Gary Galvin and Rohan Pollard awarded life memberships.
